Wine And Dice Don't Mix

Settlers of Catan Dice Game was tried out yesterday with wifey taking the first game 68 to 63. We thought this would be a fun game to fill the time needed waiting for the Olympics to start and with such a nice summer day (finally) we again couldn't help but play on the picnic table. Wine of choice was Tommasi Viticoltori 2005 Valpolicella which was a big thumbs up. Unfortunately it kicked in way too soon as even an easy game like this looked harder than it needed to be before the first game ended, and my decisions in the game can vouch for that.

Lisa had a real good strategy going in building the Knights early and using the resources often to make some very good plays. I, on the other hand, saw cities and their high point count and went for it-all or nothing. I did pull in the 20 point city but it was only enough to keep me close in the game, and even that 20 pointer only kept me close as I knew she was pulling this game out.

By game #2 I was getting over the effects of the wine (or getting used to it) and Lisa was getting the red wine syndrome. I won with a score of 65 to 55 and although we both stuck with the same strategy she got stuck with two big X's (-4) to end the game with me pulling in the +20 city once again.

Personally, I think I rely way too much on pulling in that big city point and think she has a somewhat better strategy plan going after those Knights as she does but I'll never admit to it.

Hitting a friends pool later on and plan to bring this along as a filler. Eventually we'll work to the 'advanced rules' and see how that goes-that being the more strategic version of the game as opposed to an all dice luck affair.

Wife Kicks Booty

Settlers of Catan Card Game

Enjoyed a game Saturday with my dear wife. I say dear hoping she reads this and that next time we play she shows some mercy and gives me a chance to stay close in this game.

Right off the bat she pulls both Abbeys and what does she do??? Plays one and holds the other until I have wasted every resource looking for it. By the time we were half way finished with the game I was certain there was only one Abbey in the game and I would have to contact the manufacturer and beg for the missing card.

I suppose it was only a matter of time that she picked up my cut throat ways in boardgames and use it against me.

Thankfully the night was coming fast (we were playing outside) and we had to call the game at a high score of 10 as opposed to 12. I feel lucky I had 5 points at the end. I'll be more prepared next time, to at least give her a challenge.
